Science Diet Adult Feline Light worked very well to get my cat down to a healthy weight. At 8 months of age he ballooned to 15 lbs. Switched him off kitten (very high in calorie) and put him on the SD Adult Light...of course I consulted my cat's vet prior to change. He's down to about 12 to 13 lbs. (structurally, he's a "big" cat..has a "cobby type" body). I keep him on the Light diet to maintain his weight.

We started feeding Science Diet's Adult Light food because we had a 22 lb cat! He is down to 18 lbs in less than a year and he is still healthy. We have 11 cats, so feeding each one a 1/2 cup a day or something is impossible. I really like the Science Diet Light because our other cats have slimmed down too, but not too much. And all are still healthy. :)

you can go to your vet and purchase Science Diet W/D or R/D. It doesnt sound like your cat is extremly over wieght though so you could also try bying a high quality food like iams and feeding your cat only the recommened amount to see if that works since science diets foods are very pricey and may not be nesscesary.

The best is to pick a food that is high in protein and fat and low in carbs- cats get hooked on carbs (like we can get hooked on sugar) and those are what makes them fat.
Raw food is the best for an overweight cat, but there are low-carb canned and dry foods on the market also if you don't want to go that route. Just compare labels.
Also consider giving him measured portions 3 times a day- no more food than needed for his ideal weight- don't freefeed, and no treats....
Progress will be slow but steady.
Good luck!

Iams - just give your cat the dose recommended and the cat will reach the proper weight without you putting it on a diet.

Felidae, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, and Innova are all good brands -- and considerably superior in regards to ingredients than the Purina you're feeding now.

Canned food is actually going to be the very best for getting your cat to lose weight -- there's much less carbs in it. Any of the aforementioned brands make excellent canned food as well as dry. Getting your cat more exercise and portioning her meals is also going to be key in getting her to lose weight. :-)
